"Full stack developer" is one of the most common job titles in web development, and one of the most confusing to prepare for, because every YouTube video and course seems to list a different set of technologies. This roadmap cuts through that. It gives you nine phases in the order that actually works, how long each one takes, what to build at every step, what freshers are reported to earn, and the free resources worth your time.
We teach this path to students in Rajkot, so the order below is the one we see work in the classroom: fundamentals first, one stack at a time, and a real project at the end of every phase.
The short version
- Front end: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, then React.
- Back end: Node.js with Express (or PHP/Laravel, Java or Python), REST APIs, authentication.
- Data: one SQL database (MySQL or PostgreSQL) and MongoDB.
- Ship it: Git, deployment, basic Docker, and 3 to 4 projects in a portfolio.
What Does a Full Stack Developer Do?
A full stack developer builds both halves of a web application: the front end (what the user sees and clicks in the browser) and the back end (the server, the database and the APIs that make the front end work). On a small team that can mean owning a feature from the screen design to the database table. On a bigger team it means you understand enough of both sides to work with anyone.
It does not mean being an expert in everything. Employers hiring freshers look for a solid base in one stack, working projects they can open in a browser, and the ability to learn. If you want a deeper explanation first, our guide on the reasons to learn full stack development covers why it is worth it.
Which Stack Should You Choose?
Pick one and go deep. All of these get people hired; the best choice is usually the one that matches the jobs and mentors around you.
| Stack | Languages and tools | Good fit if |
|---|---|---|
| MERN | MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js (all JavaScript) | You want one language everywhere and many startup and product-company jobs. |
| PHP / Laravel | PHP, Laravel, MySQL, plus JavaScript on the front end | You want agency, WordPress and small-business work, which is common in Gujarat. |
| Java full stack | Java, Spring Boot, MySQL, React or Angular | You are targeting large service companies and enterprise projects. |
| Python full stack | Python, Django or Flask, PostgreSQL, React | You also care about data and AI work. |
This roadmap uses MERN as the default because the same language (JavaScript) carries you from the browser to the server. Phase 4 explains how to swap in PHP/Laravel, Java or Python instead.
The 9-Phase Full Stack Roadmap
Time estimates assume 3 to 4 focused hours a day. Treat them as a guide, not a deadline: if a phase is not clicking, build another small project before moving on.
Web basics and developer tools
2-3 weeksBefore writing code, understand what happens when you open a website, and set up the tools every developer uses daily.
- How the web works: browser, server, DNS, HTTP requests and responses, status codes
- VS Code, the browser DevTools and the command line (terminal)
- Git and GitHub: commit, branch, merge, push, pull request
- Basic Markdown for README files
Build this: a GitHub profile with 2 or 3 small repositories and clear commit messages.
HTML and CSS
4-5 weeksEvery web page is HTML structure plus CSS styling, so this is the foundation of the front end.
- Semantic HTML, forms, tables, accessibility basics (alt text, labels, headings)
- CSS selectors, the box model, Flexbox and Grid
- Responsive design with media queries and mobile-first thinking
- A CSS approach: plain CSS first, then Tailwind CSS or Bootstrap
Build this: a responsive multi-section landing page and a copy of a real site's layout from scratch.
JavaScript
6-8 weeksJavaScript is the one language you cannot skip. Spend real time here; it makes React and Node.js much easier.
- Variables, functions, arrays, objects, loops, scope, closures
- ES6+: arrow functions, destructuring, spread, modules
- The DOM and events,
fetchand APIs - Promises,
async/awaitand error handling
Build this: a to-do list with local storage, and a weather or quiz app that calls a public API.
Follow our step-by-step JavaScript roadmap for the detailed order, and test yourself with the JavaScript interview questions.
A front-end framework: React
6-8 weeksReact is the most requested front-end library in job listings. It teaches you to think in components and state.
- Components, props, state, JSX and conditional rendering
- Hooks:
useState, useEffect, useRef,useContextand custom hooks - Routing with React Router, forms and validation
- Calling APIs, loading and error states, simple global state (Context or Zustand)
- Optional next step: Next.js for server rendering and SEO
Build this: a movie or e-commerce front end that fetches data from an API, with a cart and routing.
When you are ready, use the React interview questions to check what you have really learned.
Back end: Node.js, Express and REST APIs
5-6 weeksThe server receives requests from your front end, applies rules and talks to the database. Node.js lets you stay in JavaScript.
- Node.js basics, npm and modules
- Express: routing, middleware, error handling
- Designing REST APIs: resources, HTTP methods, status codes, validation
- Environment variables, logging and project structure
- Using another stack? Swap this phase for PHP and Laravel, Java with Spring Boot, or Python with Django; the ideas stay the same.
Build this: a REST API for notes, tasks or a blog, tested with Postman or Thunder Client.
Databases
4-5 weeksAlmost every application stores data. Learn one relational database and one document database so you understand both.
- SQL with MySQL or PostgreSQL: tables, primary and foreign keys, joins, indexes, normalisation
- MongoDB: documents, collections, queries and the aggregation pipeline
- Using them from Node.js with an ORM or ODM (Mongoose, Prisma or Sequelize)
- Choosing between SQL and NoSQL for a given project
Build this: connect your API to a real database and add pagination, search and relationships (for example users, posts and comments).
Authentication and security
2-3 weeksReal apps have users. This is also where many beginner projects have serious holes, so learn the basics early.
- Password hashing (bcrypt), sessions and JWT, login and signup flows
- Authorisation: roles and protecting routes on both the API and the front end
- Common attacks: XSS, SQL injection, CSRF and CORS (see the OWASP Top 10)
- Never commit secrets; keep keys in environment variables
Build this: add signup, login and an admin-only area to your API and React app.
Deployment, Docker and testing
3-4 weeksA project that lives only on your laptop does not count as a portfolio piece. Deploying it is a skill employers notice.
- Linux command line basics and how to deploy to a server (VPS, cPanel or a platform such as Render, Railway, Vercel or Netlify)
- Domains, DNS and HTTPS (SSL)
- Docker basics and a simple CI pipeline with GitHub Actions
- Testing: unit tests with Jest or Vitest, and TypeScript for safer code (strongly recommended)
- Basic data structures and algorithms for interviews
Build this: deploy a full application (front end, API and database) at a real URL, with a README and a live demo link.
AI tools, automation and job preparation
OngoingIn 2026, AI tools are part of the daily workflow of many developers, and employers notice people who can use them well and still understand the code.
- Use an AI coding assistant to speed up work, but read, test and understand everything it writes
- Call an AI model API from your back end and learn prompt-writing basics
- Automate repetitive work with a workflow tool such as n8n (see what is n8n)
- Polish your portfolio, GitHub, LinkedIn and resume; practise the interview questions above
Build this: a small AI-powered feature in one of your projects, for example a chatbot or summariser, plus a polished portfolio site.

How Long Will It Take?
It depends on how many hours you study and how much you already know. These are realistic ranges, not guarantees:
| Your situation | Hours per week | Realistic time to job-ready |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time learner or after-12th student with no distractions | 35-40 | About 6 to 9 months |
| College student studying alongside lectures | 15-20 | About 9 to 12 months |
| Working professional or part-time learner | 8-10 | About 12 to 18 months |
These are our own planning estimates from teaching, not figures from a study. Consistency beats speed: an hour a day for a year beats a month-long burst that you drop.
Projects to Build (and What Each One Proves)
- Personal portfolio website. Proves HTML, CSS, responsive design and deployment. Link every other project from here.
- To-do or notes app with local storage. Proves JavaScript, the DOM and event handling.
- API-powered app (weather, movies or news). Proves
fetch, async code, React state and loading/error handling. - Full stack CRUD app (blog, job board or expense tracker). Proves React, a Node/Express API, a database and authentication end to end.
- E-commerce or booking mini project. Proves relationships, carts, roles, payments (test mode) and a deployed live URL.
Employers read your GitHub before they read your resume. Our guide on building a portfolio that gets you hired shows how to present these.
Full Stack Developer Salary in India
Pay varies a lot by city, company type and skill level, and every source measures it differently, so treat any single number with caution. Here is what the commonly used sources report:
- AmbitionBox lists fresher Full Stack Software Developer salaries across a very wide range, roughly from ₹1.2 lakh to ₹13 lakh per year, depending on company and city.
- Training-site guides that cite AmbitionBox and Naukri, such as Codegnan, put a typical fresher range at around ₹3.5 to ₹6 lakh per year, with other guides quoting up to about ₹7 lakh.
- Product companies and strong portfolios sit at the top of the range; small agencies and smaller cities sit lower. Experience and skills move pay far more than the job title does.
We could not verify these against the live sites on the day of writing, so check the current numbers on AmbitionBox, Naukri and LinkedIn for your city before you plan around a figure. What reliably raises your offer: deployed projects, a clear GitHub, TypeScript, testing, and the ability to explain what you built.
Free Resources Worth Your Time
- roadmap.sh/full-stack: an interactive map of the technologies, good for tracking progress.
- MDN Web Docs: the reference for HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
- react.dev: the official React tutorial and docs.
- The Odin Project and freeCodeCamp: free project-based full stack curricula.
- Node.js docs and MongoDB University for the back end and database.
Common Mistakes That Slow Beginners Down
- Tutorial hell. Watching videos without building. After every tutorial, build something similar without the video.
- Jumping to React too early. If JavaScript feels shaky, React will feel impossible. Finish Phase 3 properly.
- Learning three stacks at once. Depth in one stack beats a shallow tour of several.
- Copying AI output you do not understand. Use AI to learn faster, but be able to explain every line in an interview.
- Never deploying. A live link is far more convincing than a screenshot.
- Skipping Git. Every team uses it; start from week one.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to become a full stack developer?
Roughly 6 to 9 months if you study full-time and 12 to 18 months if you study part-time, to reach a level where you can apply for junior roles. The exact time depends on your hours, your consistency and how many real projects you build.
Do I need a computer science degree?
No. Many developers are self-taught or come from other fields. A degree helps with some employers, but a clear portfolio of deployed projects and the ability to solve problems in an interview matter more for most web development jobs.
Do I need to learn data structures and algorithms?
Learn the basics (arrays, objects, hash maps, recursion, sorting and searching). Product companies test them more than agencies do, so go deeper if you are aiming at those roles.
Is full stack development still a good career with AI tools?
Yes, but the bar is moving. AI tools handle boilerplate quickly, so employers value developers who can design systems, debug, review code and build complete features. Learn to use AI tools well and keep your fundamentals strong.
MERN, Java or PHP: which is best for a fresher?
None is universally best. MERN has the most startup and product-company demand, Java is strong in large service companies, and PHP/Laravel is common in agencies and small-business projects. Pick one that fits the jobs near you and learn it properly.
Can I become a full stack developer after 12th?
Yes. Start with HTML, CSS and JavaScript while you finish your degree or a diploma, build projects from the first month, and follow the phases above. Our guide to IT training after 12th or graduation in Rajkot explains the options.
